Academia and Industry Representatives Come Together at the Battery Science Workshop 2024

17.11.2024

The "Battery Science - Workshop on Battery Science" workshop, organized by the Department of Energy Science and Technologies at our university under the sponsorship of DAAD, was held on November 11-12, 2024, at the YDYO Conference Hall. The opening of the workshop was made with speeches by our Rector Prof. Dr. Cemal Yıldız, General Coordinator Prof. Dr. Ferit Küçükay, and our Department Head of Energy Science and Technologies, Dr. Meltem Karaismailoğlu Elibol. The event brought together leading figures from various universities, research institutes, and the private sector, both domestic and international, gathering representatives from the scientific world and industry. During this scientific event, innovative ideas that will shape the future of battery technologies were shared, and steps to enhance sustainability and efficiency in energy storage technologies were discussed.
On the first day of the workshop, scientists from various research institutes and universities in Turkey and Germany participated, including Prof. Dr. Yan Lu from Jena Friedrich-Schiller University, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Yuca Doğdu from Istanbul Technical University, Asst. Prof. Dr. Nurullah Ateş from Boğaziçi University, Prof. Dr. Rezan Demir Çakan from Gebze Technical University, Prof. Dr. Hartmut Wiggers from Duisburg-Essen University, and Prof. Dr. Jörg Acker from Cottbus-Senftenberg Brandenburg Technical University. They presented in-depth studies on lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-ion batteries, battery chemistry, sodium-ion batteries, self-healing properties of batteries, and battery recycling.
On the second day of the workshop, Dr. Eneli Härk Monerjan from Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, one of Germany's leading research centers in energy and materials, gave a presentation on the development of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques for studying lithium-ion batteries. This was followed by presentations from Meta Nikel Kobalt Mining Industry Inc., one of the major companies in the battery manufacturing sector, about their battery projects and recycling activities. Then, Prof. Dr. Wolfram Jägermann from Darmstadt Technical University, Dr. Liqiang Lu, and Dr. Wei Zhang from Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin gave talks on surface chemistry in lithium-ion batteries, neutron imaging techniques in lithium-sulfur batteries, and applications of metal-organic framework structures in lithium-sulfur batteries, respectively. The workshop ended with poster presentations from participants from Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, Gebze Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, and TÜBİTAK.
The two-day comprehensive workshop provided an inspiring atmosphere with a rich flow of information, aiming to develop more environmentally friendly and efficient technologies in energy storage solutions. As mentioned in the opening speech by our Rector Prof. Dr. Cemal Yıldız, we firmly believe that this workshop, held at our university, will strengthen our academic and industrial connections and open doors to pioneering scientific research and innovative projects.
