Energy is a vital component of economic and social progress, driving the increasing production and consumption worldwide. To meet the ever-growing demand, countries invest in industrialization and development, relying on both fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and coal, as well as renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, wave, and biomass.

However, for sustainable development, it is crucial to ensure the responsible use of non-renewable energy resources and to prioritize the utilization of renewable energy sources. This requires the establishment of economic, social, environmental, and political policies. To formulate such policies, it is essential to have institutions dedicated to research and development in energy systems, capable of generating reliable information and advanced technologies.

To address the educational and research needs arising from energy-related advancements, the "Department of Energy Science and Technology" was established within the Faculty of Science at the Turkish-German University in 2014. This department aims to educate scientists and experts who comprehend the environmental phenomena and economic challenges associated with energy, and can develop innovative solutions in energy technology.

Students enrolled in the Department of Energy Sciences and Technologies undergo a curriculum that includes foundational science courses in the first year. In subsequent years, they acquire knowledge in vital energy technologies such as energy utilization, storage, and recycling, along with energy policies, optimization, measurement, and control. The program also incorporates economic, ecological, and social aspects like energy demand, resources, climate change, and global warming. This four-year undergraduate program comprises theoretical courses and a capstone project, with German as the language of instruction. The courses are taught by both Turkish and German faculty members. Additionally, students have the opportunity to benefit from the close collaboration between the Turkish-German University and German institutions, including the chance to study at a research institution or university in Germany.

Graduates of the Department of Energy Sciences and Technologies possess a versatile skill set that enables them to work across various sectors as designers or practitioners involved in energy production, transmission, distribution, and utilization. They can actively participate in national and international projects, whether in public institutions like the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Energy Market Regulatory Board, General Directorate of Petroleum Affairs, Turkish Atomic Energy Research Institute, Turkish Electricity Distribution Co., or private sector organizations operating in our country, which serves as an energy hub bridging three continents.
